Group Requirements

What is Required from the Group as a Whole and Each Group Member

Depending on what Sponsoring Option your group takes, there will be different requirements. One example is that a Group of 5 needs to prove financial stability and do credit checks through the government, whereas those under SAHs need to complete the requirements made out in their agreement with the group. Training is often involved, which is great news to most inexperienced sponsors.

Please check the Refugee Sponsorship Training Program site for details about each sponsoring option, or connect to your local SAH if you are working with them. Here are some of the most active on Vancouver Island:

A general Checklist consists of:

  1. Each member of your core group will complete a Criminal Record Check
  2. 2 or 3 representatives of your group will participate in a Sponsorship Group training workshop
  3. Your core members will participate in a Refugee Volunteer workshop (only if under the Anglican SAH)
  4. You will develop a settlement plan for the sponsorship, including a proposed budget (here is a sample for a Group of 5 sponsorship)
  5. You will learn about the organizations who provide settlement services to immigrants and refugees in your local area, such as the Inter-Cultural Association (ICA) and Victoria Immigrant and Refugee Centre Society (VIRCS) in Victoria as well as Cowichan Intercultural Society (CIS)
  6. Learn about cultural norms from the family’s country of origin
